blogging pet peeves part two

8.18.2010

(You can read my first "blogging pet peeves" post here.)

Note: These are my own personal opinions. I don't want to offend anyone by any means. I guess I'm just super picky or something but there are a lot of things that irk me in the blog world...so many in fact, that this is part two of my blogging pet peeves ;) Oh, and if you did see it yesterday, Happiness Is is taking a little break, but it's be back next week.

Google Images pictures. We're all done it at one time or another, myself included. We're writing a post and want a picture to go along with it, but don't want to take it ourselves. So we go to our friend Google Images and find a photo from there that pertains to the post. There's one problem with this - even if you provide a "via" link, you're almost always violating a copyright. Not to mention the photos are usually so...boring. It would be so much better if you just took the picture yourself. Seriously. ;)

Tons of posts on the blog home page. There is a little device called "archiving". Can you guess what it does? Yep, it files your posts so you don't have 134 posts on the first page of your blog. And if many of those posts contain photos, that also means your blog will probably load very slowly (Don't know if your blog loads slowly or not? Ask your readers!). Who wants to wait for 134 posts to load? I recommend not more than 7 posts on the main page.

"Text talk". You know what I mean. We wnt 2 the stor 2day. (Okay, really lame example but that's what popped into my brain first ;)) Ew, ew, ew. Typing like that DOES NOT by any means make you appear "cooler". Or smarter, or more mature for that matter. Same goes for adding more letters to words likee thisss. What's the point of that?

Check out my blog. I know people are just trying to advertise their blog, but who likes those comments? You know, that are irrelevant to your post and just say "Nice blog, please check out mine at [insert blog URL] and become a follower!". Um, no. In fact, I refuse to go to those peoples' blogs (Why yes, I am very stubborn when I want to be. Thanks for asking!). I am more inclined to visit your blog if you write a comment that pertains to the post and don't advertise your site.

Their, they're, and there. Please get your grammar straight, people. If you mean their baby, write "their" not there. And you're and your. For example, it would be "You're so nice!" not "Your so nice!". (Again with the lame examples...sigh.)

I'm going to stop myself here...I don't want to get too whiny :)

What are some things that bug you in the blogging community? I'd love to hear them!

  1. Love the part about the "theirs, there're, and there". :)

And about irrelevant comments - agreed. :D

  3. My biggest pet peeve is captchas or whatever they're called. I've never had a problem with spam mail and I don't have one of those things on my blogs. Get rid of them people!

  4. I definitely agree with what you say about grammar and text speak. Another thing that bugs me is when stuff is misspelt. If you're too lazy to press the spell-check button then you're probably too lazy to write a good post, in my opinion.
Also, more than one post a day really annoys me, for some reason. I don't mind it so much on a store blog, but on a regular person's blog it really bugs me. Probably because they almost always are just things like 'Sooo my parcel arrived! Squee! TTYL!' which could just be tweeted or something.
    I'll stop now--I'm getting nasty. :)

  5. I'm totally with you for the "Text Talk". There's just no point too it--very irritating when I get a comment or see a post, and I can barely read it!

  6. Definitely. I hate text talking. And I really do not like it when someone adds letters to the word. What's the point?

OH, I AM SO WITH YOU ON THE GRAMMAR PET PEEVES!!! AAARRRGGGCH! ;-) And the text talk. Actually most of them. Well, all of them, in this post. :-)

  8. Phew..... that's a lot of venting, hope you feel better..... (like I don't have those same exact thoughts) :O)

  9. I'm so with you on the text talk and the grammar. Text talk REALLY bugs me.

  10. I agree with you on the Google Images (it's just so...tacky!) and the text talk (annoying & makes you sound...less intelligent) and the irrelevant comments (so bothersome).

Also, any and all grammar mistakes (especially the apostrophe misuse that you mentioned in part one!) really bother me. Just my two cents.

  11. I totally agree with you about the text talk! Whenever I post on my blog, I always want to make sure I have everything spelled correctly, and to have good grammer.

  13. In complete agreement about the text talk. And grammar.

  14. i definitely agree with you as well. i admit sometimes i might fall into one of those categories. because of laziness. i think. but i know sometimes in writing punctuation i'm not as strict on. because the more poetry and writing i read i realize these authors paid little attention to punctuation. so i keep it in the middle ground

  15. Google images - ah, total pet peeve, but yeah, I did it the other day. I really really wanted to participate in Happiness Is and I didn't have any pictures of anything that makes me happy... so I caved. And I hated how it looked so I'm not doing that again. Haha.

Bad grammar is a major turn-off for me on blogs. I consider myself to have pretty decent grammar. Text talk - ew. Hate it.

I also definitely agree with the check out my blog thing. I hate that! If it's paired with a nice, thoughtful comment that has to do with the post they are commenting on, then maybe I'll be a little more interested in "checking out" their blog. Maybe.

  16. I agree with you about the text talking. If somebody talks like that constantly on their blog, I can barely read it and usualy don't stick around too long :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. I agree with you. Especially on the blog comment thing, since while I can see their reasons, if it doesn't have to do with the post then I think it's sort of . . . rude.

  18. This post just made my day! I get so frustrated when I poor my heart out in a post and I get a comment that says: "Cute dress. Follow my blog at xxx."

And I lose respect for blogs that type lyke thisss. Its just 2 annoying, rite?!

Thank you for this post. No joke, you really did make my day! Then again, I just woke up, so.. :)

  19. Haha I didn't even know you could get photos off of google images, and about the gramer and misspelling I'm horable at them. I'm sure I used bad grammer and/or misspelled somthing in this comment, why can't thay have check spelling on comments ; ) : ) haha

    ReplyDelete
  20. Definitely agreed! The text talk and plenty-of-posts on the homepage are probably the ones that annoy me the most.

P.S. Thanks for the comment. :)

  23. and your/you're. AAAUGHHH get them right, people! :P
And the check out my blog comment... yesss. Drives me insane! It's like they're only commenting on your blog to point to their own.

Oh, so I just realized I'm guilty of another of your blogging peeves in this comment... and twice, too. So sorry about that. I definitely add superfluous letters! :P

And as to your comment on my blog - no, please! Steal my idea, by all means!! :) That's what the purpose of it was. It'd be awesome if everyone did it. Or even if they weren't secrets -- just cute, happy little notes that would make people smile. :]

  24. I agree with improper grammar. I'm a little finicky when it comes to that too. That, and the misuse of to, too and two. :)

  25. My biggest pet peeve in the blogging universe would probably have to be those music players. Especially, the ones that are located at the very bottom of the page. Grrr!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I am very guilty of bad grammar and I know I fail at properly punctuating. It''s just not my strength. I do my best, but I know I fail all the time. But I have to say I agree with a lot of your pet peeves, especially the music. I keep my volume turned off for that reason. Text type is extremely annoying! I also don't read very long posts, I just don't have the time. Thanks for your post, it was fun to read!

  28. I am definitely with you on the pictures. I want to see the blogger's pictures...and by the way, yours are lovely.

  29. Haha, I love this! I am guilty of some of these though. My grammer sucks, it always has. And it has taken me forever to learn how to use "their" and "there" right. I didn't even think of the copyright laws before! I am for sure not using google images anymore!

    p.s.

Anyways, I h8 txt tlk 2. Like rly?!?

  31. so agree with you about "borrowed" images. I wrote a post recently about attribution and how there needs to be more of it. non-attribution is a plague upon the blogosphere, truly.

  32. ok so I use flickr when my posts need a little something-I admit it! Your blog is DELIGHTFUL by the way...

  33. oh my gosh you are adorable! i am hooked!!

i cant believe anyone writes in text on a blog...that is hilarious and I would probably not be reading that blog!

i also am not a fan of comments that ask you to check out blogs.. I am all for advertising blogs but geez let me look on my own and decide instead of feeling pressured to do so!
