the fair at dusk

We arrived as the sun was setting, swirling pink and orange and indigo as a backdrop for the sun slipping beneath the horizon. Granted, I'm not who goes on rides and consumes large amounts of deep fried food, but there's something alluring about a carnival, especially at dusk.

The flashing neon signs, a stark contrast against the darkening sky, flaunting the biggest spiders of the world, deep fried ice cream, and rides of all sorts. And in between the livestock, the deep fried kool-aid and burgers with doughnuts as buns (no, I'm not kidding), the screams of people on rides, the newly hatched chicks carefully wobbling about, there's a sense of peace. I like the fair. And I can't wait to go again next year.

  4. oh my gosh your brother looks so hipster in that hat :P looks like you had tons of fun!

what do i love about the fair? the lights. in the dark. the smell of cotton candy being newly spun. the powdered sugar being dusted on top of the funnel cakes, like a mini-snowstorms. the crowd chatter. the screams of delight by a six year old riding the ferris wheel for the first time. the sounds of the carousel, playing over and over and over again.

or the short version is i love everything about the fair. i don't really get to go that often, so it's a rather fun treat.

seriously, your brother's outfit is just awesome :))

  8. Love this!
I've heard of the burgers with donuts. I actually would try it, but one thing that I'd never try is deep fried butter. Gross.
Our fair had deep fried coke this year. Very interesting. :)

  10. That first photo has my heart. I quite love the fair, although like you, I'm not a ride and deep-fried food person. Also, the photo of your family made me smile. Tiny Lilly in her little grey dress -- so cute.

    xo,

  21. Amazing photos! Makes me miss the fair even more. Where I grew up, there were three different fairs that we always went to. I remember spending every night the summer I was 17 at the Crawford County Fair. LOVED it! Then I got married and moved to the South where they have spring festivals and fall festivals but only the state fair...and it's too far away for us to go. Makes me sad.

  24. I didn't go to the fair this year, I'm always afraid of getting trampled by the storming crowds. I will say this though, if any one takes good photos at the fair.. its you.
