thoughts on life

10.05.2011

It's an oxymoron. Life, simultaneously messy and perfectly neat, heartbreaking and being filled with so much joy it's as if your heart will burst. Gritty, yet amazingly rewarding, trials and the best days of your life. I'm not quite sure how to go about writing this -- there's so much to be said about a single word, our very existence. My time here on earth hasn't been very long, but the sliver I've been fortunate enough to experience has taught me so much.

It's taught me that faith and family are the most important things and best friends are essential, people who will just listen as you talk and talk for hours on end, put up with drama and silliness, and give you advice. Strong relationships are the basis to making it through this crazy journey -- with people as well as God.

oh hi alina.
It's taught me that every single second should be cherished and lived like it's your last. Life is too short to complain, fight, argue over petty things that are forgotten in a blink of an eye. I must confess this is something that I struggle with -- being the strong willed person I am, it's hard for me to just let it go. It's far from simple; on the contrary, it's hard. I can only trust in the grace of Christ that he will help me.

It's taught me that nothing is perfect -- no human, no blog, no situation, and most definitely not my life. When it comes to blogging, there are some trials I share on here, but this is not a dumping ground for every single thing that is going wrong in my life. That is what my diary is for. Honestly, the things that upset me every day are trivial and simply not worth rehashing. This space is a visual journal and a place to be creative, a place to remember the little things and chronicle my photographic journey.
That's not to say that life can get overwhelming; on the contrary, I sometimes succumb to tears just wondering how I can possible be able to get everything done in time. These past few weeks have been incredibly wonderful and at the same time so overwhelming at the same time. Having my sister here completes us, but it's a balancing act, really, trying to fit in work and other tasks that still need to be done while resting by spending time with my family. I wouldn't trade it for anything, though -- I'm so thankful to have this time. So no, life recently hasn't been perfect, but it's been pretty darn good.

(for some other wonderful, perfectly said words on the topic of blogging,  Libby's "the onion girls" post is simply phenomenal. pleasepleaseplease do yourself the favor of reading it.)

life has also taught me that my mother's pizza is the best.
I can't even begin to scrape the surface of all that life is and stands for, but tonight, these are these few things are the ones that are my heart. Life. I love it, in all its crazy, gritty, wonderful, frustrating, amazing glory.

Have a beautiful rest of the week, lovelies.

  2. This post is very inspiring, Carlotta. I love your blog & your photography. Your very good at what you do, and it's really nice to read your posts and look at the wonderful pictures you take. I really want to be a photographer in life, and the pictures you take inspire me more to do that. I have to say you stole the words right out of my mouth in this post.

  3. Your thoughts are so vivid and compelling. I can't explain how much this reminds me of the truer, beautiful things in life. And remembering to forget the things that will be forgotten, and remember the things that would otherwise be scraped into the dust.

thank you for this. it is wonderful.

  4. Carlotta, this wouldn't happen to be a rebuttal on that anonymous comment you got last week. I know it is. ;)
My thoughts? Id pretty much say that if you were going to make this blog a dumping ground-so to speak- of your trials, I'm not going to spend more time than necessary reading about other people's problems.
Instead, you have created a place where people like to go because its different. When you leave here, you feel more grateful. You really take hold of this precious moments.

  6. I'm absolutely loving life right now. I feel so blessed to be able to see this glimpse of your life. Love you, dear.

On a side note, when I saw the title, I thought you were going to write about Steve Jobs' death.

  7. Love this post. All those things are true about life. When we're blogging we can make life look better than it is. People don't realize that even though you're a popular blogger, you still have struggles. Lovely post and pictures! :)

  8. this was a great post. no, no one's life is perfect, and though we wish it should be, we shouldn't waste our time being a crabapple, we should relish in the things we have.

  9. You write my thoughts. The thoughts that I simply cannot put into words, you can. It's crazy. On another note, that fourth photo is kinda magical. But then again, they all are.

And, I agree, Libby's post is amazing. As is she.

    xo,

  11. wow...your writing is beautiful. it's as beautiful, sometimes even more so, as your pictures. you have a wonderful, god-given talent to touch people with your words.

with that being said, i totally agree--life is too precious for anyone to even fully appreciate! we all take things for granted. i feel this on my heart often, but when i voice it, i sound sappy and get funny looks.

please keep posting these wonderful words of yours--they are truly an inspiration!

    sincerely,
    cubette

  13. Carlotta,
I love your blog and I love it dearly. It is my favorite blog to just go and look at your pages and play around with stuff. It inspires me, and I'm so very happy that you are a blogger. After the mere 5 months that I have been blogging, I've met so many wonderful people. And I think a big wish would be to actually meet them in person. You are one of those wonderful people that I would give anything to meet you!

  15. Carlotta~ this post is my new favorite. I can't even explain why really, except that it shows us who you are. I think people think you're older because you are so mature, and you understand, and can say things so beautifully in a way even adults can't. Your blog is a blessing to those who read it. Thank you for his beautiful post.

  17. Excuse me whilst I scream over the fact that you linked to my blog post. Okay.
I really like what you wrote here. Despite not being particularly religious, I connect with what you say about relationships & trust. And your mother's pizza really does look like the world's best.

  19. You're butterfly photo is simply gorgeous! Wow.

And what you said about arguing about the little things, I have been doing way to much of that lately. It's so crazy because the people that I argue with are the people I love most in life and what we argue about is stuff that I won't even remember the next day.
Thank you for this post, it is a great reminder to try harder.
Never stop doing what you are doing with words and photos, Carlotta, you are amazing.

  26. Thank you for writing this, Carlotta. It's so easy to wonder if certain bloggers even have those struggles--even though of course I know they must. And even though I'd hardly love your blog so much if it was an emotional dump, it is good to hear every once in awhile, "Hey, I'm real too." Sometimes reading your thoughts are just as good as reading your memories.

And just for the record, some of my favorite photos of yours are the ones that are just genuine, down to earth, authentically-captured life, without the poses and set-ups. You're so talented. I hope you know that.
