It is important to be still. Life is busy and fast paced, but the act of sitting in tranquil quietness is one that should not be forgotten. Though the scene outside the window remains largely the same throughout the year, each time I sit by it, I look out at the view like it is my first time. It is where I replenish my sanity and drink in the calm. Settle in with a mug of coffee, steam swirling in wisps, and study the pattern of rain in the gray, pallid light. Feel the thunder rumble deep in your core. Rest your forehead against the windowpane and relish the cool feeling of glass on skin. Listen to the song of silence. Memorize what right here, right now feels like--because right now becomes last week, last month, last year all too quickly. Breathe deeply and be still, if only for a moment.
Where do you go to replenish your calm?

beautiful post! rain helps me to be calm, the rhythmic pattern.
ReplyDeleteVery true! Coincidentally, it's thundering outside my window right now...and it looks like rain will shortly be upon us. It's so easy to get lost, but quiet is a necessary release. I try to find some time for quiet. Personally, I think the internet is largely to blame -- we get the impression of always moving, and never slowing down...always finding new information and doing three things at once (ahem...guilty). When 1) we get much more done without that distraction and 2) the stillness helps us put everything in perspective. :)
ReplyDeletethese two photos are so perfect. oh man.
ReplyDeletethe lane is my place, walking beneath the green and feeling the breeze around me.

ReplyDeletegreat pictures, friend!
Just beautiful Carlotta! I agree with the first commenter- rain is calming, but I also love to visit the little pond in the field behind my house.
ReplyDeleteah yes. my favorite stillness is at my beloved ocean, with just myself and the seagulls. xo.
ReplyDeleteMy quiet place tends to either be nestled beneath my comforter and sheets in my bed at night, listening to the steady sound of my box fan as I drift off to dreamland escourted by analytical thoughts, or standing under my shower head in the mornings, closing my eyes, and letting the steaming hot water cascade down my body. your pictures are perfection every time.
ReplyDeletemy place to replenish is - well, a lot of places, but if i were to name one - there's this giant pine tree a little ways off from the park in our town. it's perfect to climb. and sitting in there makes me feel so happy & peaceful. though i love watching out windows, too :)

I love how calm and refreshing this is, Carlotta. :) Sorry I haven't been commenting lately! I was busy, but I missed reading your sweet posts.
ReplyDeleteMy resting place is a little nook in my bedroom, right near the window, for when the weather is bad. But when it's nice outside, I prefer to go to a nearby wood-sy area. :)

This post is beautiful. I have to say that, living in a house with seven younger kids that sits right next to a major, extremely busy road, I don't have many places I can go to just sit and be quiet. Probably the best times are late at night or early in the morning, when I happen to wake up and take my Bible out on the back porch to just sit and have some time with my heavenly Papa.

ReplyDeletei love the photos!
I needed to be reminded of this today. thanks;-) life is crazy.
ReplyDeleteI tend to sit on the couch near the fire in the living room when my family are out, turn some music on, and sit there with my journal and a latte. so nice.
I adore these pictures!
ReplyDeleteI tend to regain stillness at the piano. It's noisy, but I just play around. I also love sitting on the front porch watching traffic. :)
The second photo is simply gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI like to sit outside in the evening and just listen to the birds and other nature sounds, drinking in the beauty that is the world, and talking to God.
Your writing, your picture...they make me calm and happy. Thank you.
